Jeremy Clarkson warns of British farming losses at his Cotswolds pub and Diddly Squat farm

Jeremy Clarkson, former Top Gear presenter, bought The Windmill in Asthall, Oxfordshire, and opened it as The Farmer's Dog pub. This summer the venue added a new Knollbury Fort wine tent to showcase English wines and support British farming, while continuing to operate a butcher’s counter and street‑food kitchen.

In a column for The Sun, Clarkson revealed that 200 acres of his Diddly Squat farm were left unplanted because planting wheat or barley would have guaranteed a loss. He said making money from growing food has become “impossible” for British farmers and warned that a forthcoming Net‑Zero carbon tax on fertiliser could worsen the situation. He suggested farmers might need to lease land to large agribusinesses, install solar farms, or even sell to foreign companies.
