Jeremy Doku back with Belgium after birth of son during World Cup
Belgian winger Jeremy Doku, 24, missed Belgium’s group‑stage match against Iran at the 2026 World Cup after being ruled out with a respiratory infection. With his wife about to give birth, the Belgian federation allowed him to travel to London, where his son Praise was born on 22 June. Doku flew roughly 18,000 km in about 20 hours, accompanied by team doctors, and returned to the Belgian camp in Seattle on Tuesday night.
He was welcomed by teammates, coach Rudi Garcia and federation officials, and is expected to be available for the decisive group match against New Zealand, which Belgium must win to stay in contention for the knockout stage. The episode sparked media criticism but also widespread support from fans and fellow players, highlighting the growing emphasis on athlete well‑being during major tournaments.
