Jeremy Enriquez Takes Belize Government to Court Over Ombudsman Vacancy and Redistricting

Social activist Jeremy Enriquez has filed a constitutional claim against the Belize government, arguing that the seven‑month vacancy of the Ombudsman office denies citizens access to justice and weakens a key constitutional check. He seeks a High Court order to compel the appointment of a new Ombudsman, with the first hearing set for 14 July.

In a related development, the Caribbean Court of Justice ruled in Enriquez’s favour on several procedural issues that had blocked his challenge to Belize’s electoral redistricting. The court overturned an order requiring Enriquez to pay state legal costs, affirmed that his appeal was properly filed, and sent a bias‑recusal request back to the Belize High Court. With those hurdles cleared, Enriquez intends to continue his appeal of the High Court’s redistricting ruling.
