Jeremy Hecklinski leads Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback competition

During an open practice at Kinnick Stadium, Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski emerged as a frontrunner in the team’s ongoing competition for the starting position. Hecklinski completed 17 of 25 passes for 205 yards and five touchdowns while facing both first- and second-string defenses. His performance included several explosive plays of 15 yards or more, including touchdown connections with tight end D. J. Vonnahme and wide receiver Reece Vander Zee.

In contrast, co-No. 1 quarterback Hank Brown struggled during the scrimmage, completing 9 of 21 passes for 42 yards.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz remained cautious regarding the results, noting that the scrimmage is only one of nine practices during fall camp and that the coaching staff will evaluate the film to consider how surrounding players influenced the individual performances.
