Jeremy Porter charged with capital murder in Harris County shooting

Jeremy Porter, 47, has been charged with capital murder following a shooting in northwest Harris County that killed 5-year-old Zah’Layah Walter. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 19, near Grant and Jones roads.

According to investigators and court records, Porter allegedly fired five rounds from a white Ford pickup truck at a vehicle driven by Monica Hicks, who was traveling with her five children. Zah’Layah was fatally wounded and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Two of her siblings were injured by shattered glass during the gunfire.

Porter was arrested on Sunday after investigators used automated license plate reader technology to locate his vehicle. Court documents indicate that Porter admitted to firing the shots, claiming he believed the victim's vehicle was driving erratically and had fired at him. However, Hicks maintains there was no prior confrontation or road rage, and authorities have reported no evidence of weapons being fired from her vehicle.
