Jeremy Thomas, Oscar-winning British film producer, dies at 77

Oscar-winning British film producer Jeremy Thomas has died at the age of 77. He passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11, at his home in Oxfordshire, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Thomas was a prominent figure in international independent cinema, having produced over 80 films throughout a career spanning more than five decades. He is most widely recognized for producing Bernardo Bertolucci’s ‘The Last Emperor’ (1987), which won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Throughout his career, Thomas maintained long-term collaborations with renowned directors such as David Cronenberg, Nagisa Oshima, and Matteo Garrone. His filmography includes notable works like ‘Sexy Beast’, ‘Crash’, and ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’. He founded the Recorded Picture Company and co-founded HanWay Films.

His final professional collaboration, ‘Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo’, directed by Takashi Miike, was scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival shortly after his passing.
