Jerez, Spain adopts vine trellis system to cut patio temperatures by up to 12 °C

In Jerez, Spain, a traditional planting method using dense vine (parra) trellises is being promoted as a bioclimatic solution to extreme heat. The living canopy cools spaces through evapotranspiration, creating a “cool air well” that can lower patio temperatures by as much as 12 °C compared with conventional plastic awnings. Unlike metal or synthetic covers, the vines do not retain heat at night, allowing streets and homes to cool faster.

Researchers, including Dr. Francisco Valenzuela of CIBERES, note that the dense vegetation blocks direct solar radiation, reduces surface heat gain, and provides seasonal benefits: the deciduous vines shed leaves in winter, allowing sunlight to warm interiors and lowering heating costs. Implementation calls for drip‑irrigation, steel support cables, and regular pruning to maintain effectiveness.

Proponents argue that the system offers long‑term economic advantages over frequent replacement of synthetic awnings, positioning the vine trellis as a sustainable urban‑cooling infrastructure for both commercial streets and private patios.
