Jerome Powell maintains Federal Reserve independence from Donald Trump

Jerome Powell, the Chair of the Federal Reserve since 2018, has maintained the institutional independence of the central bank despite political pressure from former President Donald Trump. Although Trump originally appointed Powell to lead the institution in November 2017, Powell has resisted public demands to align U.S. monetary policy with political interests.

Specifically, Powell declined to lower interest rates in a manner that would have supported Trump’s populist economic goals, choosing instead to prioritize the protection of the national currency and public finances. The Federal Reserve is constitutionally obligated to consider both economic developments and the American labor market in its decision-making processes to prevent conditions that discourage hiring or increase unemployment.
