Jerry Oates, professional wrestling veteran, dies at 81

Professional wrestling veteran Jerry Oates has passed away at the age of 81. The Cauliflower Alley Club confirmed the news, honoring Oates as a skilled technician and a respected professional who helped shape an era of the industry.

Oates began his career in 1970 after training with Dick Steinborn. He competed extensively across various NWA territories, including Georgia, Florida, and Central States, and toured Japan with All Japan Pro Wrestling. Throughout his career, he held numerous titles, including the NWA Central States Heavyweight Championship and various tag team championships alongside his brother Ted Oates, as well as partners such as Ronnie Garvin and Jesse Ventura.

Beyond the ring, Oates was a prominent figure in the Columbus, Georgia, community. He owned and operated the Oates Gym for over two decades and served as a promoter for bodybuilding and wrestling events. He also held public service roles as a deputy with the Tybee Island Police Department and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2026.
