Jerry Sandusky accuser plans to recant testimony in upcoming hearing

A judge has granted an evidentiary hearing to examine claims that one of the accusers in the Jerry Sandusky case intends to recant his testimony. The hearing is scheduled for Sept. 8 in Centre County, Pennsylvania.

Sandusky, the former Penn State University assistant football coach, is currently serving a 30-to 60-year sentence after being convicted in 2012 on 45 counts of sexual abuse. An individual identified in court documents as R. R. filed an affidavit claiming his original testimony was the result of “suggestive leading questioning, prosecutorial coercion and influence, confirmatory bias and memory manipulation.” R. R. stated he was led to believe that trauma could fragment memory, allowing him to affirm details he did not fully recall.

Sandusky has maintained his innocence, claiming in an interview that victims fabricated allegations for financial gain and that prosecutors pressured accusers. The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General has described the proposed recantation as “highly suspect.” Legal experts note that even if the recantation is deemed valid, it does not guarantee a new trial, as the judge must determine how the new testimony affects the broader case involving multiple victims.
