Jerry Sandusky accuser seeks to recant testimony in upcoming hearing

A judge has scheduled a hearing for September 8 to address a recantation by an accuser in the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse case. The individual, identified in court documents as Ryan Rittmeyer, filed an affidavit claiming he was extensively coached and misled by investigators during the original 2012 proceedings.

Rittmeyer stated that authorities encouraged him to believe his role was critical to stopping a predator and suggested that trauma could cause fragmented memories, leading him to affirm details he did not clearly recall. He alleged that the testimony provided during the trial was the result of suggestive questioning and prosecutorial coercion.

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General has labeled the recantation “highly suspect.” While Sandusky’s defense team is using the affidavit to request a new trial, legal experts note that a judge must determine how this specific testimony impacts the broader case, which involved multiple victims and charges.
