Jerry Seinfeld's Lisbon festival appearance sparks artist boycotts

The Commedia a La Carte Fest in Lisbon is facing a wave of artist cancellations following the announcement of American comedian Jerry Seinfeld as a headliner. The controversy stems from Seinfeld’s pro-Israel stances and previous comments regarding the Palestinian territory.

Several Portuguese performers, including Inês Aires Pereira and the duo Cebola Mol, have withdrawn from the festival lineup. Some artists used the watermelon symbol, representing Palestinian solidarity, to signal their boycott. In response, the festival's organizers, led by César Mourão, have considered legal action and even contemplated canceling the entire festival while maintaining only Seinfeld’s performance.

Actor Javier Bardem has publicly commented on the situation via social media, addressing the wave of cancellations. While some artists have withdrawn, others, such as Ana Garcia Martins and David Cristina, have confirmed they will still participate in the event.
