Jersey Bailiff to launch appeal for Nepal flood victims

Catastrophic flash flooding in Nepal has caused widespread death and destruction, particularly affecting the Rasuwa district near the Tibet border. Since flooding began on August 26, hundreds of people have been reported killed, with many others missing. Fast-moving waters from the Bhote Koshi River have destroyed homes, roads, bridges, and energy facilities.

In response, Jersey Bailiff Robert MacRae has announced plans to launch a public appeal to support rebuilding efforts. He stated that the appeal will be launched once the immediate emergency phase has passed to ensure donations are directed toward projects that offer a “meaningful and lasting benefit.”

Jersey Overseas Aid has already provided £200,000 to support the immediate humanitarian response. Emergency workers and security personnel remain deployed in the mountainous region to search for missing residents and evacuate vulnerable communities, though difficult terrain continues to hinder rescue operations.
