Jersey Chief Minister plans to extend recruitment freeze into 2027
Jersey Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham has announced intentions to extend the government's civil service recruitment freeze into 2027. The freeze, which was initially introduced in 2024 to curb public sector workforce growth, is currently set to remain in place until the end of this year. Under the proposed extension, recruitment will be limited to a strict replacement basis and essential roles, specifically targeting back-office functions to prioritize frontline services.
Farnham stated that the government has not identified operational risks to service delivery due to the freeze, noting that the largest staff growth has occurred in frontline health services. Reducing waiting lists remains a key priority for the administration.
In addition to fiscal measures, the Chief Minister outlined core priorities for his upcoming four-year term. These objectives, which will be detailed in the forthcoming Budget and Common Strategic Policy, include boosting household incomes, increasing economic competitiveness to improve affordability, and expanding access to affordable housing for young families. Other proposed initiatives include extending school meal programs into secondary schools.
