Jersey City commemorates WWII and September 11 anniversaries
The Polish-American community on the U.S. East Coast gathered in Jersey City at the Katyń Monument to commemorate several significant historical anniversaries. Organized by the Committee for the Protection of the Katyń Monument and Historical Objects, the patriotic ceremony honored the 87th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, the 87th anniversary of the Soviet Union's aggression against Poland on September 17, 1939, and the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
Attendees included veterans, scouts, youth from Polish schools, clergy, and representatives of Katyń families. Jersey City Mayor James Solomon attended, highlighting the importance of the Polish-American community and the monument's significance to the city. Vice-Consul of Poland Wiktor Cichocki emphasized the necessity of preserving the memory of the Katyń massacre and the Soviet invasion. Tadeusz Antoniak, commander of the Polish Army Veterans Association in America, called on younger generations to remember the historical events of 1939 that were suppressed for decades.
