Jersey Devil legend traces back to Atlantic County
The legend of the Jersey Devil remains one of New Jersey's most enduring unsolved mysteries, originating in Atlantic County during the 1730s. According to folklore, the creature emerged from Leeds Point following the birth of a 13th child to a woman known as Mother Leeds.
Local legends describe the entity as a winged monster with a goat or horse-like head, red eyes, horns, hooves, and a tail, which reportedly inhabits the Pine Barrens. While some research suggests a historical figure named Deborah Leeds lived in the area and lost a 13th child named Joseph, the supernatural transformation of the child into a creature remains unproven.
