Jersey War Tunnels proposes expansion to rival European WWII museums

Jersey War Tunnels has submitted a planning application to extend its visitor center and create a new 3,000-square-foot climate-controlled exhibition space. The expansion aims to achieve museum accreditation and place the site on par with leading European World War II museums in locations such as Normandy, Denmark, and Holland.

According to planning documents, the current underground tunnel environment is unsuitable for displaying delicate historical artifacts. The new facility would allow the attraction to exhibit significant items, including an original Enigma machine, which currently cannot be displayed due to environmental conditions.

The proposal also includes infrastructure improvements to enhance visitor safety and accessibility. Plans include new pedestrian pathways to prevent visitors from walking in roads near moving vehicles, a dedicated coach layby, redesigned parking with spots for elderly and disabled visitors, and covered areas to shelter school groups and tour parties from the rain.
