Jerusalem cafe protests continue for sixth week

For the sixth consecutive week, clashes have occurred between Haredi protesters and police outside the Basimta cafe in central Jerusalem. The demonstrations target the establishment's decision to operate on Shabbat.

During the latest confrontation, Haredi demonstrators threw eggs toward the cafe while shouting "Shabbos." Secular counter-protesters, including members of the Democrats party led by Yair Golan, gathered to support the cafe, chanting, "Shabbat belongs to all of us." Reports indicated that individuals on nearby balconies threw plastic bags of water at participants.

The conflict is further complicated by the cafe's affiliation with Jews for Jesus, a Christian missionary organization. This connection has caused unease among some secular supporters. Tensions at the location have escalated since early July, involving incidents of window smashing and overturned furniture. Police have increased their presence and established wider perimeters to prevent demonstrators from forcing entry into the establishment.
