Jeseník faces long-term recovery challenges after 2024 floods

More than two years after the devastating floods of September 2024, the Jeseník region in the Olomouc region of the Czech Republic remains highly vulnerable. The floods caused extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, and riverbeds.

Jeseník Mayor Zdeňka Blišťanová noted that the recovery process will take many years, stating that even a six-year timeline would be optimistic. Approximately one-third of the town was damaged, forcing the municipality to prioritize essential infrastructure like communications and footbridges over public spaces and schools.

The recovery effort faces significant hurdles, including complex bureaucratic systems, coordination requirements with organizations such as Povodí Odry, and delays from construction firms. Additionally, there are concerns regarding whether state funding will cover repairs that improve upon the original structures rather than merely replicating them.

The municipality has prepared 32 applications under the 'Živel' program, covering roughly 107 projects valued at nearly two billion CZK. Due to the slow disbursement of subsidies, the town has had to allocate an additional 29 million CZK to pre-finance certain works.
