Jesus Luzardo placed on Phillies injured list with shoulder inflammation
The Philadelphia Phillies have placed All-Star left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo on the 15-day injured list due to left shoulder inflammation. The move is retroactive to September 12. While an MRI revealed no structural damage, the inflammation has sidelined the pitcher, who was recently a top contender for the National League Cy Young Award.
Luzardo has had a standout 2026 season, posting a 14-5 record with a 2.87 ERA and 221 strikeouts over 29 starts. His most recent appearance was a career-high complete-game shutout against the Atlanta Braves on September 7. The injury occurred shortly after that performance, leading to him being scratched from his next scheduled start.
Interim manager Don Mattingly stated that while the injury ends Luzardo’s regular season, the team has not ruled him out for a potential postseason return. Luzardo is expected to be eligible to return to the active roster on September 27, the final day of the regular season. To fill his roster spot, the Phillies have recalled right-hander Grant Holman from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
