Jesús María residents protest tree removal at Campo de Marte

Residents of the Jesús María district in Lima, Peru, held a protest at Campo de Marte to denounce the removal of four trees during renovation works in the public space. Protesters, represented by the Movimiento Ciudadano Ambiental Campo de Marte, claim the removal constitutes an environmental crime, alleging that at least one of the trees being cut down showed signs of new growth.

The residents identified Superconcreto Perú SAC as the company executing the remaining works, while noting that the projects are directed by the Fondo Metropolitano de Inversiones (Invermet), an entity under the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima. The group has demanded a halt to the construction and plans to report the incident to the Public Ministry.

In response to the allegations, Invermet stated that the four trees in question were dead and represented a risk.
