Jesús Suárez released after brief detention in Portuguesa
Jesús Suárez, a Venezuelan citizen previously released under precautionary measures, was briefly detained by the National Guard (GNB) in Portuguesa state on October 4 before being released. Suárez was traveling via public transport from Táchira to Caracas to comply with a judicial appearance when he was intercepted at a checkpoint in the Agua Blanca municipality.
Despite possessing an release order and legal documentation following his conviction for concealment in the ‘Brazalete Blanco’ case, authorities claimed the arrest warrant remained active in the system. His release was secured following intervention by lawyers from Foro Penal, who coordinated with terrorism courts in Caracas.
The NGO Coalición por los Derechos Humanos y la Democracia denounced the incident as a ‘revictimization’ of Suárez, noting that he had been imprisoned for over two years on conspiracy charges that were previously dismissed. Human rights groups expressed concern that such arbitrary detentions undermine legal security and the emotional stability of formerly incarcerated individuals.
