Jesse Eisenberg’s ‘The Debut’ closes London Film Festival

Jesse Eisenberg’s new musical comedy, ‘The Debut’, closed the BFI London Film Festival at the Royal Festival Hall. The film stars Julianne Moore as Mona Friedman, a reserved New Jersey housewife who finds a sense of community and identity through a local theater production of a fictional musical titled ‘Nosy Neighbors’. Paul Giamatti appears in a supporting role as the production's director, Jerry Blankenbuehler.

During the premiere, Eisenberg noted that the film is inspired by his own transformative experiences with community theater as a child. Moore praised the screenplay, describing it as ‘one of the best scripts I’ve ever read in my entire life’. Eisenberg also revealed that he wrote and produced seven original songs for the film’s soundtrack.

In addition to the film's upcoming December 11 release, Eisenberg discussed his future projects, including an untitled TV series for A24 set in 2002 that explores the beginnings of the culture wars. The series is expected to be executive produced by Peter Rice.
