Jesse Eisenberg’s ‘The Debut’ receives critical acclaim at film festival

Jesse Eisenberg’s third directorial feature, titled ‘The Debut’ (also referred to as ‘A Grande Estreia’), has premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to significant critical acclaim. The A24 comedy stars Julianne Moore as Mona Friedman, a housewife who seeks to rediscover her identity by auditioning for a local community theater musical. Moore’s performance has been described by critics as a career-high, portraying a woman who becomes increasingly consumed by her character.

Paul Giamatti stars alongside Moore as a tyrannical theater director. The film has already generated Oscar buzz, a development that Eisenberg admitted causes him “pure terror” due to the vulnerability of releasing creative work to public opinion. The production also features Halle Bailey and Bernadette Peters, and is produced by Emma Stone. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on January 28.
