Jesuits expel priest Francesc Peris for decades of sexual abuse
The Society of Jesus has expelled 84-year-old priest Francesc Josep Peris Boixeda from both the religious order and the clerical state following a canonical criminal trial. The decision, decreed by Superior General Arturo Sosa, follows investigations into at least 24 allegations of sustained sexual abuse against minors committed between 1972 and 2005.
The abuse occurred at the Casp school in Barcelona, Spain, and the Juan XXIII school in Cochabamba, Bolivia. While ordinary judicial proceedings were archived due to the statute of limitations, Peris reportedly acknowledged the facts during ecclesiastical investigations in 2024.
Peris will remain in a Jesuit residence under a private agreement subject to strict institutional monitoring. He is prohibited from contacting minors or vulnerable adults, communicating with victims, leaving the premises without explicit authorization, or receiving visitors without prior permission. The Society of Jesus acknowledged past failures in protecting victims and stated that this dismissal does not extinguish its moral and institutional responsibility to those harmed.
