Jesus Christ Superstar debuts in Singapore with contemporary rock production
The Olivier Award-winning production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has made its Singapore debut at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands. Running from 19 August to 6 September, the international touring production offers a contemporary reimagining of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice rock opera.
Directed by Timothy Sheader, the production eschews traditional Biblical imagery like robes and sandals in favor of an industrial-style set featuring scaffolding, streetwear, and handheld microphones. The staging emphasizes a rock concert atmosphere, utilizing piercing lights and a live band to present the story through a modern lens.
The performance focuses on the tension between Jesus, played by Luke Street, and Judas Iscariot, played by Javon King. Rather than a conventional religious drama, the production highlights the human vulnerability of the characters, portraying Jesus as a leader buckling under expectation and Judas as a desperate figure witnessing a movement spiral out of control.
