Jesy Nelson cries over twins' spinal jackets as they battle SMA

British singer Jesy Nelson posted an emotional Instagram video showing her 14‑month‑old twins, Story and Ocean, wearing spinal jackets and splints during a heat wave. She wrote that she had "cried all day" and described how the devices are needed to prevent their spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) Type 1 from worsening, even though they cannot correct the condition.

Nelson, whose twins were diagnosed with the severe, incurable genetic disease earlier this year, used the post to call for a nationwide newborn screening programme for SMA in England. She had previously launched a petition that gathered more than 150,000 signatures and spoke in a parliamentary debate, after which only 72 % of the country will have access to the screening from October. She later met with Secretary of State Sharon Hodgson, showing a video of two sisters with SMA to illustrate the impact of early treatment.

SMA Type 1 typically leads to severe muscle weakness, limited head control and a life expectancy of less than two years without treatment. Nelson hopes that early detection and therapy can improve outcomes for her children and other affected infants.
