England to Implement Universal Newborn Screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy

The UK Department of Health and Social Care announced that every newborn in England will be screened for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) using the routine heel‑prick blood spot test. The programme will begin in October 2026 with a staggered rollout to all 13 screening laboratories, reaching full national coverage by October 2027. Early detection allows life‑changing gene‑therapy or drug treatment before irreversible nerve damage occurs, dramatically improving survival and motor outcomes.

The policy change follows a high‑profile campaign led by former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson, whose twin daughters were diagnosed with SMA Type 1 after a delayed diagnosis. Nelson’s advocacy, including a petition that gathered more than 150,000 signatures and a Prime Video documentary titled *Jesy Nelson: Life Changing*, prompted public pressure on health ministers. Health Secretary James Murray said, “No parent should have to watch their child lose the ability to move or breathe.” Former health secretary Wes Streeting added he felt “pressure” to get the test rolled out so “every child benefits.”

SMA UK and other charities welcomed the decision, calling it a “landmark moment” that ends a postcode‑lottery and gives thousands of babies the chance for a normal life.
