Jet fuel price surge drives travelers to deplete United Airlines mileage balances
Rising jet fuel costs after the Iran conflict have pushed airline ticket prices to record highs, prompting travelers to rely on loyalty points. Alira Iheanacho, who had saved over 100,000 United Airlines miles, used roughly 120,000 miles for airfare and hotels to visit Shanghai and Hong Kong Disney parks, then paid cash for the return trip.
Airlines have reduced capacity and Spirit Airlines has ceased operations, further tightening seat availability. Experts say loyalty programs are now helping sustain travel demand while consumers face “sticker shock” from cash fares.
