Jet Set nightclub collapse case moves to civil liability stage

Legal proceedings are advancing in the case involving the roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub, an incident that occurred on April 8, 2025, resulting in 236 deaths and over 180 injuries. Owners Antonio and Maribel Espaillat face charges of involuntary manslaughter and involuntary assault.

In the preliminary stage, the court admitted several companies as civilly liable third parties, including Difusora Hemisferio, Inversiones CCEP-2, and Inversiones E y L, alongside Evelyn Espaillat and Ana Grecia López. The court must now determine the extent of civil responsibility and the specific compensation amounts for victims, which will be calculated based on factors such as economic dependency, loss of income, and moral damages.

Meanwhile, the Movimiento Justicia Jet Set has called on the Dominican public to maintain pressure on the judicial system. Movement president Ana María Ramírez stated that evidence suggests the structural dangers were known prior to the collapse. Representatives of the movement and local religious figures have expressed concerns regarding potential economic influences on the judicial process, urging citizens to remain vigilant to ensure proportional justice.
