Jeton Chashivari calls for SDSM participation in electoral law reforms
Justice Minister Jeton Chashivari has called for the return of the SDSM opposition party to the working group tasked with reforming North Macedonia’s electoral legislation. During a recent consultative meeting at the Ministry of Justice, representatives from all other parties present in the Assembly participated, but SDSM was notably absent.
Chashivari described the opposition's absence as a “handicap” to the reform process, which has been underway for four months as part of the national reform agenda. He emphasized that electoral laws are not the property of any single party or the government, but are essential rules for democratic expression. The Minister stated that the goal is to achieve institutional responsibility rather than political dominance.
To resolve the deadlock, Chashivari announced intentions to meet directly with SDSM leader Venko Filipce. He aims to discuss unblocking the process and ensuring the reforms align with European standards and OSCE/ODIHR recommendations. The Minister urged the opposition to participate in upcoming sessions to ensure a broad political consensus on the new legislative framework.
