Jetstar to charge for overhead cabin luggage from February 2027
Jetstar, the budget subsidiary of Qantas, has announced it will begin charging passengers for overhead cabin luggage starting in February 2027. Under the new policy, the airline's current 7 kg weight limit for carry-on items will be replaced by a size-based restriction.
Passengers will be allowed to carry one small item, such as a handbag or laptop bag, for free, provided it fits under the seat in front of them. Access to overhead lockers will require the purchase of a "Priority Baggage" option. Prices for this service are expected to be dynamic based on the route, ranging from approximately AU$25 for short domestic flights to AU$52 for longer international routes.
Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully stated the change aims to "make better use of overhead locker space, streamline boarding and help more flights depart on time," noting that the removal of weight limits is intended to reduce frustration for both customers and crew. The move has drawn criticism from Australian politicians, including Senator Bridget McKenzie, who characterized the policy as a "cash grab."
