JetZero develops fuel-efficient blended wing body aircraft
JetZero, a California-based startup, is developing the Z4, an aircraft featuring a blended wing body design similar to a manta ray. This innovative structure, which fuses the cabin area with the wings, aims to reduce fuel consumption by 30% to 50% compared to traditional models like the Boeing 787.
The aircraft is designed to carry approximately 250 passengers with a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles. To enhance the passenger experience, the design replaces traditional windows with high-definition screens displaying real-time external views and utilizes skylights for natural lighting.
Financial and industrial development is underway, including the construction of a manufacturing complex in Greensboro, North Carolina. This facility is estimated to cost over $4.7 billion and could create approximately 14,500 direct jobs over ten years. The U.S. Air Force has supported the project through a $235 million program, and the U.S. Export-Import Bank has expressed interest in evaluating up to $3 billion in financial support for the factory.
JetZero expects its full-scale prototype to make its first flight in 2027, with commercial production targeted for the early 2030s.
