JetZero develops windowless Z4 aircraft to cut fuel use
American company JetZero is developing the Z4, an aircraft featuring a Blended Wing Body (BWB) design that integrates the wings and fuselage into a single structure. This radical architecture, which resembles a stingray, aims to reduce fuel consumption by 30% to 50% compared to conventional commercial aircraft by increasing lift and reducing aerodynamic drag.
To achieve these efficiencies, the Z4 eliminates traditional side windows to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics. In their place, passengers will use high-definition screens that transmit real-time exterior imagery. While this design may pose challenges regarding passenger motion sickness during turns, the company maintains that the project is commercially viable.
The Z4 is designed for long-distance flights with a range of approximately 5,000 nautical miles (about 9,260 kilometers) and a capacity for 200 to 290 passengers. United Airlines has expressed interest in the model, with plans to potentially purchase 200 units. A prototype flight is planned for 2027, with commercial scaling expected to begin in the early 2030s.
