Jewel Howard-Taylor charged with drug trafficking in Liberia

Former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has been formally charged with drug trafficking, money laundering, and criminal conspiracy. The charges are part of a major investigation into a suspected transnational narcotics network operating within and beyond Liberia.

Authorities intercepted Howard-Taylor at Roberts International Airport as she was preparing to travel to Ghana for a women's forum. She was subsequently taken into custody at the Liberia National Police headquarters. The legal action follows a massive cocaine seizure in Paynesville valued at approximately US$317 million.

In addition to Howard-Taylor, Liberian authorities have charged three foreign nationals in absentia: two Croatian citizens and one Ukrainian national.

Howard-Taylor and her political allies have vehemently rejected the allegations, describing them as a baseless and politically motivated “witch hunt” intended to damage her reputation. Her legal team has also raised concerns regarding due process and suggested the government might attempt to use fabricated AI-generated evidence in the case.
