Jewel Howard-Taylor charged with drug trafficking in Liberia

Liberia has charged former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor with drug trafficking, money laundering, and several other offenses as part of an investigation into a transnational narcotics network. Howard-Taylor, who served as vice president from 2018 to 2024, was intercepted by immigration officials at Roberts International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Ghana.

Following her detention, she reported to the Liberia National Police headquarters. The charges against her include criminal conspiracy, criminal solicitation, criminal facilitation, and the unlicensed importation, sale, distribution, and transportation of controlled substances.

In addition to Howard-Taylor, the Liberian government has charged three foreign nationals in absentia: Croatians Nikolai Ivancic and Mihovil Vrovac, and Ukrainian Tara Zaderieko. Authorities stated they are working to locate and apprehend these individuals.

The legal actions are connected to an investigation involving a massive seizure of approximately 3,971 kilograms of suspected cocaine in Duazon, Margibi County, valued at an estimated US$317 million.
