Jewel Howard-Taylor indicted in Liberian cocaine trafficking case
Former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has been indicted by a Montserrado County grand jury on seven counts related to an alleged US$317 million cocaine-trafficking network. The indictment, filed by the Boakai-Koung administration, names 18 defendants, including foreign nationals, police commanders, and security officials. The charges against Howard-Taylor include criminal conspiracy, illicit trafficking, and money laundering.
The prosecution’s case relies heavily on WhatsApp voice notes from August 31, 2026, in which she allegedly requested money from a suspected cartel intermediary. However, the indictment does not charge her with drug possession or describe specific protective acts she provided to the network. Critics and legal pundits have characterized the indictment as flawed and politically motivated, noting chronological inconsistencies—specifically that the voice notes are dated after her arrest—and a lack of evidence linking her to the physical movement of the drugs.
The case stems from a July 21 seizure of 3,971 plates of cocaine at a compound in the VOA Community. Two foreign nationals, Srdan Seles and Johann David Garces Grajales, were arrested at the scene.
