Jewelers Mutual study finds many engagement rings remain uninsured before proposals

A study by Jewelers Mutual Group reveals that a significant portion of engagement rings are left unprotected during the period leading up to a proposal. According to the 2026 Jewelers Mutual Engagement Ring Study, 41% of proposers hold the ring for more than a month before the event, often storing it in unsecured locations like drawers or closets.

With 62% of people considering an engagement ring one of their three most expensive possessions, the lack of coverage presents a financial risk. The report notes that 45% of proposers store the ring in unsecured areas. Furthermore, standard homeowners or renters insurance policies often prove inadequate, typically capping jewelry coverage between $1,000 and $2,500, which may not cover the full value or loss of the item.

The consequences of being uninsured are evident following damage; among uninsured wearers who experienced ring damage, 55% never had the item repaired.
