Jewelry insurance coverage gaps for homeowners and renters
Many homeowners and renters may be underinsured regarding their jewelry due to a lack of understanding of standard policy limitations. While most personal property policies include jewelry, they often apply a sublimit—a separate, lower cap specifically for jewelry items. This cap typically ranges between $1,000 and $1,500 for all jewelry combined, regardless of the total coverage amount of the policy.
Standard policies often provide coverage for theft, but they are subject to these sublimits and deductibles. Crucially, many standard policies do not cover accidental loss, such as a ring being lost while swimming, or unexplained disappearances. Because of these gaps, dedicated jewelry insurance may be necessary depending on the value and nature of the items owned.
