Jewish Americans divided ahead of Israeli elections

Jewish Americans are experiencing deep political, religious, and generational divisions regarding the upcoming Israeli elections on October 27. The vote is widely viewed as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, occurring amidst the ongoing trauma of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack and the subsequent war in Gaza.

Supporters of Netanyahu, particularly within the Orthodox community, view his leadership as essential to protecting Israel. Conversely, many liberal and younger Jewish Americans argue that his policies have damaged Israel’s international standing. This tension is compounded by rising antisemitism and violence within the United States.

While non-citizens cannot vote in the Israeli elections, many American Jewish communities remain deeply emotionally invested. Synagogues across the U.S. are hosting educational programs to navigate the complex political landscape, which currently shows a tight race between Netanyahu’s bloc and an alliance of rivals.
