Jewish community life expands in Austria with new centers

Jewish community life in Austria is seeing significant developments through the reopening of historic sites and the establishment of new cultural hubs. In Vienna, the Stadttempel is set to reopen following a ten-and-a-half-month restoration period, timed to coincide with the High Holy Days starting with Rosh Hashanah. Chief Rabbi Jaron Engelmayer, who will be succeeded by Rabbi Yaron Nisenholz, described the temple as the heart of the Israelite Cultural Community (IKG) and noted that the Jewish community in Vienna is growing.

In Graz, the Milton-Weber-Kulturzentrum has officially opened as the first permanent Jewish cultural institution in Austria. Located at David-Herzog-Platz, the center was conceived in 2021 following attacks on the Graz synagogue. The facility is designed to provide a space for art, literature, music, and socio-political discourse, serving as a permanent home for the local Jewish community. The project was supported by the City of Graz, the State of Styria, and the Jewish Cultural Foundation.
