Jewish Museum Westphalia hosts ‘Dignity’ exhibition

The Jewish Museum Westphalia in Dorsten is launching a special exhibition titled ‘Dignity – Ágnes Lukács and Burkhard Schittny’. Running from October 18 until April 18, 2027, the exhibition creates a dialogue between the works of Holocaust survivor Ágnes Lukács and contemporary artist Burkhard Schittny.

Ágnes Lukács, a Hungarian-Jewish artist born in 1920, survived Auschwitz and several concentration camps, including Groß-Rosen and Neuengamme. Following her liberation by the US Army in 1945, she used various mediums—including drawings, prints, and oil paintings—to document her experiences of persecution and forced labor, often focusing on themes of human solidarity and the preservation of dignity.

The exhibition pairs Lukács’s historical documentation of survival and human connection with six works by Schittny, exploring how human dignity can be maintained under the most inhumane conditions and the responsibilities that arise from that struggle.
