Jewish teachers file human rights claims against Ontario school boards
Twelve Jewish teachers in Ontario have filed human rights applications against four school boards and two unions, alleging discrimination and failure to address antisemitism in the workplace. The respondents include the Toronto District School Board, York Region District School Board, Simcoe County District School Board, and Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, as well as the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation.
The applicants allege they were penalized for reporting antisemitic incidents and are seeking $150,000 each in general damages, along with compensation for psychological counseling. They are also requesting that the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal mandate the development of transparent processes to combat discrimination, including the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance working definition of antisemitism.
StandWithUs Canada has expressed support for the educators, citing a study by sociologist Robert Brym which indicated that nearly half of reported antisemitic incidents in Ontario schools were not investigated by authorities. The study found that approximately one in six incidents involved school-sanctioned activities or were initiated by teachers.
