Jewish teachings on the concept of proselytism and Abraham

Based on the Parashat Lekh Lekha, religious commentaries explore the spiritual and legal significance of Abraham as the first proselyte. According to the tractate Chaghiga, Abraham is recognized as the first prince because all converts who follow his path are regarded as princes of nations.

R. Ghedalia Schorr notes that the teachings emphasize Abraham’s role in innovating proselytism, which is defined as the strength to detach from one's biological family to become part of Israel. Legally, a convert is likened to a newborn, as previous familial ties are considered severed.

Commentaries from Rashi and Rashbam further interpret the biblical promise that all families of the earth will be blessed through Abraham. Rashbam suggests this can be understood as the families of the earth being ‘grafted’ into Abraham’s lineage, much like a branch is grafted onto a tree, reflecting his title as the ‘Father of a multitude of nations’.
