Delhi Police de-notifies Jantar Mantar as official protest site

Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar has issued a standing order de-notifying Jantar Mantar as a designated venue for public demonstrations. Following recommendations from a Ministry of Home Affairs committee, three alternative locations have been identified: Ramlila Maidan in Central Delhi, Burari Ground in North Delhi, and CBD Ground in East Delhi.

The decision has faced significant opposition from the INDIA bloc and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, have filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

During recent demonstrations, authorities implemented heavy security measures, including the deployment of over 30,000 personnel, drone surveillance, and restrictions on metro station access and mobile internet. CJP leaders Abhijeet Deepak, Sourav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were among those detained during attempts to access Jantar Mantar.

Regarding the new venues, reports indicate that Ramlila Maidan is heavily booked, with only a few days available in December. Utilizing the site for large gatherings involves significant costs, including a booking fee and security deposit, totaling approximately 1.21 lakh rupees per day.
