Jharkhand floods as heavy rain pushes rivers above danger levels
Heavy rainfall and a deep depression have caused significant disruption across Jharkhand, leading to flooding, transport issues, and damage to crops. In East Singhbhum, the Subernarekha and Kharkai rivers have risen above danger levels, with the Kharkai river reported at 4.50 metres above the mark.
In Ranchi, the weather has caused school closures and flight cancellations at Birsa Munda Airport. A large tree fell on a school bus in the AG More area, though no students were injured. The rain has also led to power outages due to uprooted trees and electricity poles.
Water levels in several dams, including the Kanke Dam, are nearing capacity. The rainfall has also impacted paddy and vegetable crops in various districts. Meteorological officials expect the weather system to weaken and conditions to improve by late September.
