Hemant Soren faces PMLA court as Jharkhand HC rejects stay plea

The Jharkhand High Court has rejected a plea by Chief Minister Hemant Soren seeking to stay proceedings in a money laundering case. The case, investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), involves the alleged illegal acquisition of 8.86 acres of land in the Baragain area of Ranchi, valued at over 31 crore rupees.

Soren had challenged a June decision by a Special PMLA Court that refused his discharge application. In his recent petition, the Chief Minister argued that the trial should not proceed without prior government sanction from the Governor to prosecute him as a public servant. However, the High Court bench observed that the allegations regarding land acquisition and the manipulation of revenue records do not prima facie appear to be connected to the lawful discharge of his official duties.

Following the dismissal of the stay request, the Special PMLA Court is set to proceed with the framing of charges. Soren is expected to appear in person before the court for this stage of the legal process. The ED has previously framed charges against 15 other individuals in connection with this investigation.
