Jharkhand issues health alert after first Rubella case confirmed

Health authorities in Jharkhand have issued an alert following the first confirmed case of Rubella (German measles) this season. The infection was identified in a 10-year-old girl from Mundatoli village in the Thethaitangar block of Simdega district, after blood samples were analyzed by the microbiology department at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi.

In addition to the Rubella case, 15 active measles cases have been reported across four districts, including East Singhbhum and Pakur, which border West Bengal. In response, the National Health Mission (NHM) has established a high-level state war room to manage contact tracing, treatment, and containment efforts.

Health officials are intensifying door-to-door screening and implementing a mission-mode Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign. The initiative focuses on children aged 9 months to 5 years, ensuring those with pending doses receive them and those with no prior doses receive both required shots. This response comes as the Indian government aims to eradicate measles and rubella nationwide by 2026.
