Vestmannaeyjar Holds Þjóðhátíð 2026 Festival, Thousands Gather

The annual Þjóðhátíð festival was formally opened in Vestmannaeyjar on 2026, drawing thousands of participants to the Herjólfsdal venue. The ceremony was led by Hörður Orri Grettisson, chairman of ÍBV, who highlighted the decades‑long volunteer effort that underpins the event.

Bishop Guðrún Karls Helgudóttir delivered a keynote urging solidarity, mutual care and strict safety measures, praising local prevention initiatives such as the “Bleiki fíllinn” campaign. Speakers, including Magnús Bragason, emphasized community unity as “thousands of hearts beating as one.” The iconic white tents were erected, and police reported a smooth first night, with weather conditions noted but not disrupting the celebrations.
