Netflix series The Scandal draws mixed reviews and actor apologies

The Netflix series ‘The Scandal’, a Joseon-era reimagining of the French novel ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, has drawn significant attention and mixed reactions following its release. Starring Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook, and Nana, the eight-episode series follows a complex web of seduction and power plays involving a noblewoman, a libertine, and a virtuous widow.

Ji Chang-wook discussed his portrayal of the character Cho Won, noting that the role’s psychological complexity and the direction of Jung Ji-woo gave him the confidence to perform his first sex scene. He emphasized his desire to portray the character’s playboy nature naturally rather than through exaggeration.

However, the production has faced criticism. Some viewers have noted a slow pace due to the expanded episode count and a lack of tension in intimate scenes. Additionally, actress Nana has issued an apology after facing backlash regarding her appearance; some viewers felt her modern look, specifically her lip fillers, was inconsistent with the historical Joseon setting and distracted from the immersion.
